Sonrise School
Musanze, Rwanda
As former partner of AESF, we provided this school in northern Rwanda (serving grades nursery through grade 12) with resources to bring its educational operation to a level where it can compete with the rest of the world.
Specifically, we repaired chalkboards and whiteboards, provided staff development to the teachers who work there, instituted a curriculum of AP classes, and provided students with basic resources that we have available in the United States and take for granted, but were simply not present in their current classrooms.
Part of our team obtained GAFE (Google Apps for Education) school status, which allows the school access to Google applications and the Google environment for free. It provided them with a secure online learning environment, email access for all students, and a world-class collaborative workspace.
In addition to being a Google Apps for Education certified school (the only one in Rwanda, and one of only three in Africa), we facilitated their certification as the first public SAT testing site in the country.
AESF Chief Technology Officer Monika Macias obtained a computer library of 15 chromebooks for student use. Many thanks to the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make all this happen for the teachers and students of Sonrise!
